What is a Central Vacuum?

If you are reading this article you probably already know the answer.  This was a very popular item put in houses in the 1980s while they were being built.  There is a large canister in the basement that houses the vacuum itself, with hose outlets in the rooms of the hose.

You just need to carry your hose and powerhead and other attachments around the house instead of lugging a heavy vacuum.  Because the vacuum device itself can be much larger than a traditional vacuum, it also has much more suction than many other models.

While it is difficult to retrofit a central vacuum into an existing home, it can be done.

Both the Centec and ZVac models boast the biggest cleaning areas with 14" wide powerheads.  The benefit of the Centec over the ZVac is the telescoping wand.  The Centec is also known for its quiet operation, making it the must have if you are concerned about noise.

If you are looking for a powerhead only, rememberer the Centec also comes without a wand, but it must be compatible with the quick release mechanism.  If your existing wand as a hole snap closer, the last option is the best.

You really cannot go wrong with any of the central vacuum powerhead models we looked at, just be sure to pay attention to each one's unique features to find the one that best suits your needs.

Do You Need a Central Vacuum Powerhead?

Central vacuum devices are powerful by design, but a powerhead really adds another level of cleaning.  The power in the powerhead refers to the brush inside the head.

This brush is powered and spins fast, allowing you to get a deeper clean that is especially important for carpets, although all the powerhead reviewed in this guide feature non marking wheels that allow you to also clean hard surfaces.

If you were using a brush head that was not powered, the brushes would spin under the power of the vacuum suction itself.  While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, some of the sucking power will need to be used to spin the brush, which means less power to actually suck up dirt!

If you have a central vacuum system in your home and your home has carpet, finding the best powerhead for your central vacuum is an absolute must!

How to Use Your Central Vacuum

Chances are you've recently moved into a home that has a central vacuum and have no idea how it works or how to use it.

There are a couple of important things you should know.

First and foremost, always make sure your central vacuum is emptied on a regular basis.  While it will have more capacity than an upright or canister vacuum, it is still essential to clean it for the best operation.

We've shown you the best central vacuum powerhead, but don't forget you also need a hose.  Be sure that the host fits the wand you are also using.

One of the main benefits of a central vacuum is you aren't lugging it up and down the stars.  If the wand, powerhead, and hose are a bit too much to carry still, consider having one for each floor.

Don't miss these great tips for maintaining your central vacuum!
